Rapid keystrokes filled the room. Blue light from the laptop screen carved hollows beneath Vivian’s eyes as she hunched toward it. Her phone rattled against the wood beyond her elbow, breaking through the gloom. For a moment she paused and glanced away from the screen, realizing that she had been sitting in this cracked vinyl chair for hours, her lower back aching in a way she had stopped noticing long ago. She was ignoring the phone for perhaps the fourth time that evening. Probably Sissy again. Get the hint. I am busy. She stroked her finger over the old key sitting on the laptop in between the screen and the keyboard. Then, she returned to her writing.
About a month ago, she had been upstairs, ready to finish checking books back in so she could go home, when she came across a rusted key stuck inside one of the returns. Some monster of a patron must have used it as a bookmark and forgotten it before turning the book in. She thought to put it in the lost and found, until she had it in her hand. It looked vaguely familiar. Before she made it to the box of abandoned items, it hit her that the old-fashioned key matched the forgotten locked door in the basement under the library. In the twenty years since she started working there, no one had so much as glimpsed the inside of that room. Since there was no pressing need to enter, the staff ignored it. She felt in her bones that the key belonged to that door, and she was right.
For a moment, she could have sworn she saw the dust floating upward. Ridiculous. Then the light from the basement windows settled over a surprisingly cozy room. She would come to discover that despite the patrons walking above, it was quiet down here, the whole library reduced to a distant, soothing murmur. The place practically invited her to stay a while. A little dusting, the relocation of an old desk from storage, and she was ready to get back to her dreams. Her first story went up on a serialized reading platform. She wasn’t expecting it to go too far. She was shaking the dust off herself, just testing the waters. She must have had some leftover luck from finding the key, because the story was a sensational hit. Readers left comments, then more comments, and she began refreshing the page the way other people checked the weather. She ended up publishing the story independently, and readers bought it. There were requests for signed copies, and soon an upcoming event to read a passage and sign books. Her life was taking off.
It was easy, at first, to keep her life tidy around the writing. She ate lunch at the desk, then ate nothing but the occasional granola bar unwrapped and forgotten beside the laptop. She kept the same chair, the same dim glow, and a rule she never broke: she did not stand until the chapter was finished. The numbers climbed, and she watched them the way a person watches a fire. Every time she checked, there were more readers and more words, and every time she stopped, they seemed to slow. So she stopped stopping. Her sister’s calls went unanswered, and the voicemails piled up unplayed. A plant upstairs on her counter began to droop, and she didn’t water it. Her hands trembled over the keys, and she told herself it was only the cold of the basement.
