About this story
Radek Kral knows how to skate.
As a left wing for the Milton Keynes Tempest, ice is the one place he has never had to think twice. Then a knee injury gets him benched and packed off to Calderton-by-the-Sea for six weeks of rehabilitation, healing baths and strict instructions to avoid heroics.
He lasts less than a day before finding the Silver Pavilion.
Beatrice “Trix” Gale has spent most of her life inside Calderton’s century-old ice theatre. She grew up as one of its rink rats, became one of its principal skaters, and has no patience for the injured hockey player who assumes show skating will be easy because he already knows how to move on ice.
Radek only intends to fill a temporary place in the chorus. Trix has no intention of becoming responsible for him. Neither expects an old theatre, a summer production of Return to Wonderland, and a little impossible magic to rearrange their plans.
Because at the Silver Pavilion, the stories performed on the ice have a habit of becoming just a little too real.

He'd been sent to the seaside like a naughty toddler.
That was the only honest way to put it, whatever the club physio wanted to call it on the paperwork. Rehabilitation programme. Structured recovery period.
Radek Kral called it what it was: exile, with a sea view.
He stood in the middle of his room at the Imperial Hotel with his kit bag still over one shoulder and looked up at a ceiling that had to be a good three metres off the floor. It was difficult to maintain a proper sense of grievance somewhere this pretty.
The sash window was tall enough to walk through if someone took the glass out. Beyond it, Calderton-by-the-Sea stretched along the esplanade in pale yellow, mint green, butter cream and blue, as though somebody had colour-corrected the entire town and forgotten to tone it down afterwards.
Somewhere beyond the terraced houses was actual sea.
Grey, cold, British sea.
He wasn't holding out much hope for it living up to the paintwork's promises.
Radek dropped his bag onto the bed.
It was a small bag. Deliberately small. Small enough to say quite clearly that its owner did not intend to be here long enough to require luggage.
His phone buzzed before he'd even taken his jacket off.
Coach: Rehab. Baths. No heroics. No contact. Pre-season doesn't start without you, but it also doesn't wait forever. Behave.
Radek stared at the message.
Then sent back a thumbs-up.
It felt like the correct amount of enthusiasm for a text that had just reduced his summer to a three-item list, two of which were prohibitions.
Rehab.
Baths.
No heroics.
Fine.
He could do bored in a postcard pretty place for a few weeks. People usually paid good money for this sort of thing.
The room itself had character, he had to admit. It was also quite obviously part of a building that had once been several buildings and had never entirely finished the merger.
The corridor outside his room had two different kinds of skirting boards. Halfway to the stairs, the ceiling changed heights. A door that ought to have opened into the room next to his instead was entirely decorative.
Beside his own door, a ceramic plaque read THE DUNES in curling hand-painted gold.
Two doors further along, someone had screwed a plastic fire-safety number directly into Georgian panelling.
Whatever standards the Imperial applied to renovation, consistency wasn't one of them.
Radek took a photograph of the room plaque and sent it to his father.
Radek: They've named the rooms.
His father replied almost immediately.
Dad: That's how they charge you extra.
Radek smiled despite himself.
He unpacked exactly three things and went to stand at the window again.
Down below, people were walking along the promenade in coats despite it being May. A gull sat on a wrought-iron railing with the proprietary air of something that had inherited the town.
Six weeks.
Possibly less.
September was what mattered.
September meant pre-season. Proper ice. Contact. The smell of a dressing room full of damp kit and bad decisions. His line. His teammates. The satisfying violence of a puck hitting the boards exactly where he'd intended it to.
The sea could have him until then.
Breakfast the next morning was served in what must once have been the drawing room of one of the original houses.
The parquet floor gleamed. Tall windows looked onto the promenade. Wooden panelling climbed halfway up walls painted a shade of green that Radek suspected had an expensive historical name.
The room sloped almost imperceptibly towards one end.
The adjoining breakfast room didn't.
Somewhere beneath the carpeted threshold, two Georgian households were still refusing to agree on floor level.
Radek took coffee and eggs to a table by the window and checked his phone.
His mother had texted overnight.
Mum: Good, they've sent you somewhere with baths. Hockey is a good way to break a leg for free and now they can also pay to sit in hot water about it.
Beneath it:
Dad: Does the town have decent ice? Ask before you get comfortable.
Radek didn't have an answer for either of them yet.
He did have another photograph from the Tempest group chat.
Training.
Not much. A few of the lads doing summer work back in Milton Keynes. No reason for it to bother him.
He zoomed in anyway.
Someone else was wearing the bib on the left.
Of course someone else was.
He was injured, not dead. Teams didn't preserve empty spaces out of sentiment.
Radek locked the phone and drank his coffee.
September.
That was all.
He had an appointment at the Baths in forty minutes.
The Royal Thermae of Calderton did not look, from outside, like a sports rehabilitation centre.
It looked expensive, certainly.
Old in the well-maintained way that required considerably more money than being new. Pale stone. Tall windows. Carved lettering over glass doors. Ironwork clean enough that nobody had painted over ten generations of rust.
Inside was a tiled vestibule warm enough to fog Radek's glasses for half a second.
He took them off, wiped them on the hem of his T-shirt and put them back on while the world resolved into polished stone, old photographs and people in white robes moving through the building with the confidence of regulars.
The air smelled faintly mineral. Not chlorine. Not exactly stone either. Something warm and clean and metallic underneath.
A reception desk occupied the centre of the hall. Behind it were treatment boards, sepia photographs and framed prints of men in alarming Victorian bathing costumes.
Radek gave his name.
The woman behind the desk checked a screen.
"Mr Kral. Convalescents' programme?"
"Apparently."
"First visit?"
"Is it that obvious?"
Her eyes flicked towards his jacket.
"Only because you've still got that on."
Radek looked around.
Three separate corridors left the reception hall. Beyond one archway, broad stone stairs climbed towards an upper gallery. Through another, he caught the shimmer of water.
She handed him a wristband.
"Convalescents' Wing is through the Pump Hall, up to Gallery East, then follow the blue tiles."
"The blue tiles."
"You'll see them."
That was usually what people said immediately before giving directions that made no sense whatsoever.
He thanked her and went through the arch.
Then stopped.
The hall beyond had no business fitting behind the frontage he'd just walked through.
A broad basin of greenish mineral water occupied the centre of the space, steam rising from its surface in slow spirals. Stone columns climbed towards a ceiling high enough to catch pale daylight from windows near the roof. Galleries ran around the upper level behind carved balustrades, and arches opened away from the central hall in more directions than Radek could immediately count.
People moved along the galleries above.
Others sat beside the water below.
A woman in a white robe disappeared through one arch and failed to emerge anywhere his mental map said she should.
Radek looked back over his shoulder.
Reception was still there.
The street should, geographically speaking, have been approximately twenty metres beyond the wall on his left.
Instead there appeared to be another staircase.
A staff member carrying towels walked past.
Radek caught her eye.
"This looks like it's been lying about its size."
She laughed.
"First time?"
"Apparently that's obvious too."
"Convalescents?"
He held up the hand with the wristband.
"Come on. I'm going that way."
That turned out to be an exaggeration.
She led him around the edge of the Pump Hall, up a shallow flight of worn stone steps and beneath an arch where the tile changed from cream to blue.
At the top, the gallery opened back over the water.
From there Radek could see that the main basin was only the centrepiece. Smaller pools disappeared beneath side arches. One tiled passage curved away behind a row of columns. Farther down, a sign pointed left towards HOT CHAMBERS, while another indicated SEA TERRACE in the opposite direction.
He tried to keep track.
Up one flight.
Left.
Along the gallery.
Right beneath an arch.
Past a recessed pool where two elderly men were arguing quietly over a newspaper headline.
Another right.
That couldn't be right.
The street ought to be there.
Instead there was a long tiled corridor ending in sunlight.
"You expanded into the building next door?" he asked.
The woman with the towels looked back.
"No."
Radek decided not to pursue it.
They passed the entrance to the Hot Chambers.
Steam rolled gently across patterned tile and curled into the corridor. Through it Radek caught fragments rather than a room: a curved stone wall, somebody sitting beside a pool, another figure standing beyond them.
For a second, the standing figure turned its head.
Radek had the odd impression of eyes catching the light in a way eyes generally didn't.
Then a guest carrying a stack of towels crossed between them, and when the view cleared there was only steam.
"Here you are."
He had almost walked past the sign.
CONVALESCENTS' WING.
The change was immediate.
The stone remained. The ceiling was still unnecessarily high. But the rooms beyond were recognisably medical.
Treatment tables.
Resistance bands.
Exercise equipment.
A monitor mounted against a wall that looked old enough to object to electricity on principle.
That, at least, Radek understood.
His clinician already had the Tempest notes.
Grade Two MCL sprain. Three weeks into recovery. Swelling settled. Stability improving. No contact. No uncontrolled lateral work.
She had him walk, bend, straighten, balance and answer questions about pain before finally getting to the bit he'd been waiting for.
"Your club's cleared you to begin controlled, pain-free linear skating as tolerated."
Radek sat up straighter.
"Skating."
"Controlled."
"Yes."
"Linear."
"Obviously."
"Pain-free."
"Naturally."
She gave him a look that suggested she had met athletes before.
"No aggressive crossovers. No hard edge loading. No sudden lateral push. No contact. If the knee feels unstable, you stop."
"So basically I'm allowed to skate like my nan."
"If your nan has excellent joint recovery discipline, then yes."
His nan, for the record, would have considered that a challenge.
The clinician handed him a folded towel, a robe and a locker token.
"Changing room's through there. Locker twenty-seven. Long Pool when you're ready."
Radek looked towards the tiled arch she indicated.
"There is a dress code for walking through water?"
"There is if you're planning to do it without your trousers on."
Fair point.
The changing room was another collision of centuries.
Painted wooden lockers had been fitted beneath older tiled arches. Modern showers sat behind frosted glass. The floor was warm beneath his feet, and somewhere beyond the wall water moved with a steady hollow echo.
Radek changed into swim shorts, folded his clothes into the locker and tucked his glasses into their hard case beside his phone.
The world beyond arm's length softened immediately.
He put on the robe and pool shoes, shut the locker and followed the blue tiles.
The Long Pool was exactly what the name promised: narrow, elegant and much longer than he expected, running beneath a vaulted ceiling with old tiled walls on either side.
The water was warmer than a training pool but cooler than something designed purely for soaking.
Handrails ran along one side. High windows turned the steam silver.
There were six people already in it. Three were elderly.
One was walking backwards while a therapist watched.
A woman perhaps twice Radek's age was doing controlled knee lifts beside the wall.
Nobody appeared to be in any hurry.
Radek looked at the pool.
Then at the clinician.
"You want me to walk."
"I do."
He gave her a flat look and stepped in.
The warmth climbed his leg.
He hated how good it felt.
Ten minutes later he hated how much less stiff his knee felt even more.
He walked forward. Backwards. Bent the knee under reduced load. Worked through controlled movements that would have felt insultingly easy three weeks ago and now required enough concentration to irritate him.
At the far end, one of the elderly men passed him going the opposite way.
"Don't race him," the clinician said.
"I wasn't."
The old man glanced over.
"Shame."
Radek liked him immediately.
By the time he climbed out, his leg felt tired but loose.
Useful tired.
Not the hot warning soreness that meant he'd pushed too far.
The clinician checked it once more, reiterated the skating limits and wrote something onto his programme.
"Twenty minutes warm recovery before you leave. Fern Court's easiest from here."
"Is that back through the Pump Hall?"
"No."
Of course it wasn't.
She gave him directions.
Radek understood the first two.
He lost the third.
Fortunately, the Thermae had apparently anticipated this weakness in the human brain and placed painted signs at intervals.
Still in his robe and pool shoes, he followed the arrows for FERN COURT through a narrower passage, down three worn steps, beneath a glass-roofed corridor beaded with condensation and finally through a pair of wooden doors.
Then stopped for the second time that morning because the building was doing something it shouldn't.
It was raining.
He could see the rain beyond the courtyard walls, grey against the roofs of Calderton.
He could hear it ticking against the glass corridor behind him.
Inside the court, it might as well have been July in another country.
Ferns crowded around pale stone walls in glossy fans. Broad-leafed plants spilled from beds beside the water. Moss softened the edges of old carved channels where mineral water trickled steadily into the pool.
Steam drifted above the surface.
The air was warm, damp and almost entirely still.
There should have been wind.
There was always wind at the British seaside. It was practically a legal requirement.
Here, fern fronds barely moved.
Radek stood in the doorway long enough that a woman reading a newspaper beside the pool glanced up.
"First time?"
He was beginning to resent the phrase.
"Is this normal?"
She looked around.
"Bit quiet today."
"No, I mean—"
He gestured helplessly towards the ferns, the warmth, the rain visibly falling somewhere that apparently didn't include the courtyard.
She followed the gesture and seemed genuinely puzzled.
"Oh. Fern Court."
"Right."
She went back to her newspaper.
Radek gave up.
He slipped out of the robe and lowered himself into the water.
Warmth closed around his knee.
For the first time in three weeks, his body stopped keeping a running list of all the things it could not currently do.
He sat back against the stone.
Rain ticked somewhere beyond the leaves.
A carved channel beside him carried steaming water over smooth rock with a sound almost too quiet to notice.
Across the pool, steam moved.
Someone was standing there.
Radek couldn't make out much beyond a pale face and dark hair damp against narrow shoulders. The figure was perfectly still in a way people rarely were, even when resting.
Then they turned their head.
There was something about the profile.
An angle that didn't quite—
Steam rolled between them.
When it cleared, there was nobody there.
Radek stared.
A man two places along from him opened one eye.
"You all right?"
"Fine."
"Good."
The man closed his eye again.
Heat.
Steam.
Three weeks of being benched.
Boredom.
Perfectly reasonable explanations.
He preferred those.
When his allotted time was up, Radek pulled the robe back on and followed the signs towards the changing rooms.
This route was different too.
Down a short staircase.
Past a wall of old framed photographs.
Through a tiled passage where the colour changed halfway along.
Around a corner that should, by his reckoning, have put him somewhere inside the Grand Pump Hall.
Instead it returned him to the lockers.
He showered, changed back into his clothes, put his glasses on and waited for the room to sharpen around him again.
Then he followed the EXIT signs.
Another corridor.
Another shallow staircase.
A different set of photographs.
And, abruptly, reception.
Radek stopped.
The woman behind the desk looked up.
"All done?"
He looked back at the corridor.
Then towards the archway into the Pump Hall.
Then tried to fit the route he'd just walked inside the exterior dimensions of the building.
It did not improve with effort.
"Does this place go under the road?"
"Not that bit."
That was not an answer.
She smiled.
"See you next time, Mr Kral."
Radek should have gone back to the Imperial.
Instead, his knee felt better than it had in days and boredom was a more effective motivator than good sense.
So he walked.
The smart end of town gradually loosened around him.
Pastel terraces gave way to cafés and little shops. The promenade widened. An ornate Victorian shelter faced the beach, its ironwork painted cream and green. Donkeys plodded up and down the sand with the exhausted dignity of creatures who had long ago accepted that humans were ridiculous.
Further along stood the pier.
Beyond that, past rooftops and signs, Radek could see the angular silhouette of what looked suspiciously like a wooden rollercoaster.
In the other direction, the town changed again towards working harbour buildings and boats.
Calderton-by-the-Sea, he was beginning to realise, hadn't replaced much.
It had simply kept adding things.
Roman springs.
Georgian terraces.
Victorian pier.
Whatever decade had thought a wooden rollercoaster beside the sea was sensible.
And apparently an ice theatre.
Purple and gold bunting had started appearing along the promenade railings.
A café window displayed black-and-white photographs beside a freshly printed sign.
**THE SILVER PAVILION
NEARLY 100 YEARS ON ICE**
Another photograph showed women in skating costumes from some decade Radek couldn't place without insulting at least three of them.
He followed the bunting without consciously deciding to.
The Silver Pavilion was smaller than the publicity suggested.
Older too.
More timber and much less glamorous from the outside.
It sat tucked into the seafront among buildings that looked as though they'd been arguing about property boundaries since before planning permission existed.
A gift shop occupied one side.
On the other, a fish and chip shop was already doing enough trade to scent half the pavement.
Outside the Pavilion, a glossy poster promised:
RETURN TO WONDERLAND
A grown-up Alice in vivid blue stared dramatically past the camera, surrounded by a wall of red-coated soldiers. A dark figure in red and black stood slightly behind her, coat tails cutting through theatrical smoke.
Radek gave the poster four seconds.
Show skating.
Holiday entertainment.
Probably difficult in the way all professional performance was difficult, but not his world. Not skating in any sense he'd ever needed to care about.
What actually caught his attention was the piece of laminated paper taped beside the doors.
PUBLIC SKATING — SESSION TIMES
Underneath, in slightly less authoritative handwriting:
Rink closed to public 2–5pm — Silverworks rehearsal
Radek read the morning times twice.
Controlled skating.
Linear.
Pain-free.
He could do that.
He was still looking at the notice when he heard blades.
Faintly, through the old building.
A clean scrape.
Then another.
Music beneath it.
Radek turned his head.
There was a service passage down one side of the Pavilion. He followed the sound without making a conscious decision to do so.
At the far end, a door stood open perhaps an inch.
Enough for music to escape and just enough for him to see movement through the gap.
Red coats crossed the rink in a formation too clean to be accidental.
Not milling around.
Not filling space.
Lines appeared, broke apart and re-formed so quickly Radek found himself tracking them the way he would track players developing through neutral ice.
Then a gap opened.
Blue.
The Alice from the poster.
She was much smaller than the photograph had made her look.
Tiny, actually.
She came across the ice at speed towards a tall dark-haired man in red and black.
He took her by the waist.
For one moment Radek thought she was going to stop.
Instead the man used her momentum.
Alice left the ice.
Not high for long, but hard and fast enough that Radek's body understood the calculation before his brain had named any of it.
Speed.
Weight.
Angle.
Where her centre would go.
Where his hands had to be.
Where she would land if either of them got it wrong.
The man caught her, redirected her and put her down backwards on one blade.
She was already moving into the next phrase before Radek had finished imagining the bruise that mistake would have produced.
He didn't know what the move was called.
He didn't need to.
Whatever this was, it wasn't easy.
The crack in his mental filing system was small.
But it was there.
"Can't watch that one, I'm afraid."
Radek turned.
A tall blond man was leaning against the doorframe behind him.
He was conspicuously good-looking in a way that probably made selling tickets very easy, but there was nothing aggressive about his smile. He had the relaxed posture of somebody who had interrupted this exact sort of trespassing a hundred times and intended to remain cheerful through the next hundred.
He nodded towards the public noticeboard.
"Closed rehearsal."
"I wasn't going in."
"No." The man's eyes flicked towards the one-inch gap. "You'd upgraded yourself to lurking."
"I wasn't lurking."
"You were standing silently behind a door watching people."
Radek considered this for a moment.
"Fair point."
The blond man smiled and reached for the door.
"Public session's tomorrow morning if you fancy doing it properly."
He started easing the door shut, then paused.
"Bring your own skates if you've got them."
Radek looked at him.
The man's smile widened by perhaps half a degree.
"Something tells me you have."
The door clicked shut in his face.
Radek stood there for a moment, unsure whether he'd just been told off or invited back.
Possibly both.
He returned to the noticeboard.
Tomorrow morning.
His knee felt loose.
Stable.
Better than it had in weeks.
The physio had specifically said controlled linear skating was permitted as tolerated.
There was no reason he couldn't come back.
He looked once more at the old Pavilion doors.
"Gentle," he muttered.
Then headed towards the Imperial with his hands in his pockets and the sound of blades still somewhere in his ears.
Just a skate.
Nothing heroic.
He could manage that.
Probably.
