When her grandmother’s irreplaceable Guidebook of Crossings disappears on her first day at Silverstone Academy, Fern suspects someone on the faculty knows more than they are admitting. Then she finds a torn page hidden in the restricted Archives.
The page contains part of a crossing rite, and someone has already tried to use it.
When the academy’s head librarian is found dead after the rite goes terribly wrong, suspicion spreads through Silverstone. Faculty members guard their secrets, evidence points toward an innocent man, and the person responsible is preparing to try again.
With her opinionated familiar, Pickles, providing sarcastic commentary, Fern must trust the unusual sensitivity she has spent years doubting. She may not have the credentials of Silverstone’s experts, but she can recognize what they have overlooked.
Before anyone else is hurt, Fern must identify who stole the guidebook and stop them from attempting the rite again.
